Boycott Divest Sanction Sweden (BDSS)

The United Nations has ruled that Sweden is violating its binding human rights obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by keeping Julian Assange detained without charge. The Swedish government has also been condemned multiple times by the United Nations and the Council of Europe for refusing to outlaw torture, refusing to stop indefinite detention and isolation without charge, and for its involvement in CIA kidnappings and renditions.

Over the last 15 years Sweden has become a human rights predator. That is why we call for the boycott, divestment and sanctioning of Sweden. Most Swedes are angry about our government’s actions, but the Swedish state does not listen to us. Our government preferentially acts on behalf of Sweden’s powerful establishment families. A single family (Wallenberg) controls 42% of Swedish stocks and most of ours arms industry. Another (Bonnier) owns the majority of our media. Sweden’s arms industry is financially and logistically integrated with the largest US and UK weapons companies. In 2011 Sweden overtook Israel to become the largest per capita arms exporter in the world.

The Pledge

1. I will demand the boycott, divestment and sanctioning of Swedish industries and investors until Sweden respects its legal obligations under international human rights law and ceases undermining the United Nations human rights system.

4. I will not travel to Sweden for business or leisure purposes.

I will oppose placing someone from Sweden on any board or in any position of influence or responsibility unless they have demonstrated their respect for the rule of law by publicly calling for Sweden to respect its binding obligations under the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights.

6. If I am invited to Sweden or to a Swedish owned or controlled space for a cultural, academic or political purpose, I will refuse to attend unless I use the opportunity to publicly call for Sweden to respect its legal obligations under international human rights law and to cease undermining the United Nations Human Rights system.

7. I will oppose inviting anyone from Sweden to a business, cultural, academic or governmental meeting unless they have publicly called for Sweden to respect its legal obligations under international human rights law and to cease undermining the United Nations Human Rights system.

11. I will not buy Swedish books, magazines or newspapers of any genre unless their authors or editors call for Sweden to respect its legal obligations under international human rights law and to cease undermining the United Nations Human Rights system.
